Battle Ground Community
UMC
works
with and supports a variety of mission and community service projects:
Mission Plan:
1) Help the students of
Captain Strong
Elementary School
We are collecting money to obtain the school supplies
needed by the students of Captain Strong for the school year. We have
pledged to provide pencils for all the students and water color sets for the
third and fourth grades.
Other opportunities for mission at Captain Strong include
volunteering to help meet long-term needs for tutors, reading buddies, and
others. These tasks would require volunteers to spend one hour per
week at the school.
Help is also needed for special events such as the All-Health
Day, Book Fair, and Carnival. The tasks in this group would require
volunteers to spend several hours over the course of one or two days one
time during the school year.

Outreach coordinates
the gathering of donated food and household items to be delivered to the
North County Community Food Bank on a regular basis. If we each
continue to buy just one extra item for the needy when we do our grocery
shopping, we can make a big difference.

BGCUMC has entered into partnership with
The Arc of Clark County in an effort to
collect good, used clothing, linens, towels and other household items for
those in need. A collection barrel has been placed in the church and
donations will be much appreciated!

United Methodist Women
work directly with the YWCA in collecting new items such as
toiletries, towels, linens and clothing to be donated to the Battered
Women's Shelter of Clark County. As well, UMW supports missionary Paul
Jeffrey in his ministry abroad and in the United States. Please contact
Sylvia Stokes for information about how you can help.

Mary-Martha, Women's Circle --
The women of BGUMC will have an opportunity to gather on the 2nd
Thursday of each month at 2:00 p.m. While the emphasis of the group
will be on hospitality, listening for and learning what the Lord may be
saying is the goal to focus on. So far, their most visible activity in
the church has been arranging for the Sunday morning coffee hour hosts.
Please contact Joann G. at 574-7162 if you have any questions or would
like to volunteer.

Ladies
Fellowship / Crafts
-- The Tinker Belles
meet Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. is your opportunity to take time
and be responsible to only yourself! Perhaps you have a craft project
to work on, perhaps not. Either way, please join us for some time together. Feel
free to bring books or crossword puzzles, pictures, anything that you would
love to spend some time on in the company of your female friends.

United Methodist Men
strive to fulfill the goal to minister to all
men in our church, as well as those we would like to have join us! We have
the primary purpose to declare the centrality of Christ in the lives of men
and in all their relationships. UM Men is a creative, supportive fellowship
of men who seek to know Jesus Christ, to grow spiritually and to seek daily
his will.
The Men’s group meet weekly on Thursday mornings from
10:00AM until 12:00PM for general fellowship, conversation, coffee and
doughnuts. Visitors welcome.
Each year the
Men’s Ministry offers a $700 scholarship for someone in our church that is
going to college. The primary source of income for this project is hosting a
coffee break at the southbound Gee Creek Rest Area along I-5. Both the men
and the United Methodist Women host this event. The women use their share of
this income for mission work. If you are going to college and wish to apply
for the scholarship, stop by the church office and ask for an application.
The people of the church have received a lot of joy from providing these
funds.
The Gee Creek coffee
service is provided each day during the week from 6 AM to 10 PM. We break this up into 4-hour shifts and it takes a lot of volunteers
to make it a successful operation. During the month of July there will be a
sign-up list at the church and I will be asking many of you to volunteer for
serving on this project. In addition to raising funds for the scholarship
and missions we are also providing a needed service to weary drivers using
I-5. The coffee and beverages are really appreciated and we also provide
information and an ear for listening and sharing. We like to think our
service at the rest area has saved lives.

An Opportunity
for Community Service - CREAM rises again!
The CREAM program (Computer Reuse/Recycling and Marketing) has been
accepting unwanted computers and televisions at no charge since 2003.
Usable computers are refurbished, reformatted with new software by Clark
College students and then donated to Salvation Army for distribution to
qualified residents. Hazardous components of TV picture tubes are recycled
or disposed of safely.
CREAM has just begun
to accept unwanted techno-trash (CDs, DVDs, diskettes, videotapes,
audiotapes, and their cases) to keep these out of landfills. These items
are shipped to GreenDisk, a Washington based firm that securely destroys all
intellectual property and recycles the materials. If you have any of
the above items you wish to donate for recycling, bring them to the church
and members of The Fire Brigade will get them to the CREAM donation site at
the Clark County Jail Work Center in Vancouver. – Doug Shaul
